Michael Sauer

California Sunday Chair

casunday@ppconline.com Phone: (530) 276-8404
Michael started his photographic career in 1996 at the prompting of friends and family who could see that his heart was in both capturing sights from around the world and experiencing the thrill of helping others learn to see their world in a new ‘light’. Michael has found that a lifetime is an exceedingly short period of time to fit in all the wonderful hobbies – and eventually the careers – that he has come to enjoy. Channeling an OCD’esque personality, he has found himself involved in occupations requiring detail and a high degree of accuracy, from certifying diamonds to running an accounting business. However, his passion changed from office-based businesses to the creative and traveling career of professional photography. Michael began shooting wildlife, scenic and fine art images, studying with leading outdoor photographers Galen Rowell, Art Wolfe, Franz Lanting and George Lepp. Michael has since expanded his business to incorporate portrait and commercial photography, and once again surrounds himself with the best in the business at the state and national levels. Raised in a loving family environment and prompted at an early age to give back to the world that has provided him so many wonderful opportunities, Michael now finds himself serving on the board of the Professional Photographers of California – which he considers a great honor.

Alex Munoz

Publication Editor

editor@prophotowest.com Phone: (800) 439-5839
One of my priorities as editor of Pro Photo West is to redesign the “look and feel” of our magazine, as well as its content. PPC has always been an organization focused on educating its members, and I will double-down on this promise by bringing more relevant content to each issue. Articles should not only focus on what’s important to seasoned photographers and members, but also attract potential new members who are just starting out. My goal is to introduce you to ideas, concepts, and artists from all over the world; if we look past our front lawn, there is plenty to be discovered. As editor of Pro Photo West, I will work with all of you to make this the best magazine PPC has ever published. As I’m new to this position, I’d like to share a little of my background with you. It all started with my Dad’s Ricoh TLS 401 when I was six. Back then, I was shooting black and white portraits on film, which I still occasionally use today. I used a tiny little darkroom, a repurposed guest bathroom, and saved up for my first used B&W enlarger. I took my hobby seriously during the following years, and could be found constantly creating new pictures. Over time, and with lots of practice, they got better and it became clear to me that I wanted to be a professional photographer, and create amazing pictures for a living. Like with so many plans in life, we don’t always get what we want right away, and I ended up with a degree in business and psychology first. I am still not sure how that happened, except to say that, for me, it’s always has been– and always will be– about people. Frankly, the psychology degree ended up being very useful. After graduation, I went back to creating photographs, and studied hard. I attended West Coast School of Photography, numerous workshops, and continued to master my craft. I learned how to use the rapidly evolving technology to my advantage as I practiced controlling light and shadow, image dynamics, and composition. I am a certified professional photographer (CPP), and am currently enrolled in the PPC Business & Arts Degree program. Maybe because my interest in people persisted, I am still fascinated by all kinds of personalities, and love what I do. When I am not editing Pro Photo West, I work as a commercial fashion and lifestyle advertising photographer based in Los Angeles, CA..
